Life's challenges can feel dark, heavy, or even impossible to deal with.

Most people who start EMDR feel stuck repeating the same painful patterns. Perhaps you can relate. Maybe you feel like you want to escape your life or you know you'd be happier if you made changes but it feels safer and more comfortable to stay the same.

Stuck in negativity and feeling hopeless, you may feel like life is being wasted on being unhappy.

Do You Feel Numb, Ashamed, Lost?

Do any of the following resonate with you?

  • You lost the joyful feelings that you used to have in life.
  • You are in a constant state of panic and it rules your life.
  • You feel dread, fear, strange thoughts, and a pounding heart.
  • You feel fear-stricken, even in the "comfort" of your own home.
  • You feel like you are wandering through life, feeling like something is missing or your balance is "off."

If these sound true for you, we want you to know that even though you might feel like a failure for needing help, that couldn't be further from the truth. It takes courage to become aware about what you are going through and ask for help.

Even if you don't believe you deserve care, you do. You deserve to take care of yourself.

  • Get to the root problems and solve those instead of using band-aids.

Meet Our EMDR Therapists

EMDR at Recreating Dawn isn't a one person show. It's a full team of clinicians trained in EMDR and EMDR intensives, so you're matched with whoever's the right fit and has room for you, not whoever happens to have a big name on the door.

Joy Williams, Founder, brings training in EMDR and EMDR intensives, alongside Art Therapy, and Reiki. She's credentialed through the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB), previously worked at the Cleveland Clinic, and founded the Intuitive Clinicians Council.

Lauren Ferns, LPC, ATR-P, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Provisional Registered Art Therapist trained in EMDR, and Certified Clinical Trauma profession II bringing that same blend of EMDR, parts work, and art-based approaches to her work.

Jocelynn Mejstrik rounds out our EMDR trained team, offering the same real, grounded approach to helping clients reprocess what's been holding them back with art therapy too.

Across the board, our therapists share a real, non-hierarchical approach: LGBTQ+ affirming, and built for people who've tried the usual routes and are ready for something that actually gets to the root of it. One clinician on our team describes EMDR as "evidence based brain magic": it's real science that helps your brain do healing work that talk therapy alone often can't reach.

When you reach out, we'll match you with the therapist on our team who's ready to work with you now.

Navigate Life’s Challenges With Ease

EMDR helps you rise above your challenges and start moving towards your ideal life with less suffering and more fulfillment

You will get to clear the internal blocks through innovative therapy tools. You’ll realize that you deserve kindness and compassion - the same that you give to others, and You’ll finally resolve things from your past.

Even if you are fearful about talking about your childhood, EMDR can help.

The beautiful part of EMDR Therapy is that you don't have to tell the whole story of the difficult events (unless you want to). We've helped trauma survivors clear blocking beliefs, feelings and sensations that hold them back. Who knows what you could do or be without your history keeping you stuck!

Conditions EMDR Therapy Can Help With

EMDR was developed for trauma, but what it treats has grown a lot wider than that. Our therapists use it to help people move through:

  • Complex and generational trauma (CPTSD): when the same painful patterns keep repeating, sometimes across a whole family history
  • Anxiety and panic: that pounding heart, can't settle feeling that doesn't let up
  • Depression: especially depression that feels tied to something specific from the past
  • Hypervigilance and a constant "on guard" feeling: even in places that should feel safe
  • Relationship and intimacy struggles: including and relationships that don't fit a one size fits all mold and when your behavior patterns don't work for your relationships
  • Stuck points from talk therapy: if you've done the work before and still feel like something's unresolved, EMDR often reaches what talk therapy alone couldn't

You don't need a diagnosis to start, and you don't have to retell every detail of what happened to benefit. If any of this sounds familiar, it's worth a conversation.

How EMDR Works

EMDR consists of 50 to 60-minute, one-on-one sessions that help you work through your concerns. In addition to listening, your therapist will share what the science tells us about what's going on for you, they play an active role in guiding your process. Here’s how it will work step-by-step:
home

1. First, your therapist will provide a safe, affirming environment where you can feel comfortable sharing your struggles and goals.

From the first contact, we empower you to choose the right clinician for you and simplify intake and paperwork to make seeking services easier.

2. When establishing care:

Through education and supportive reflection you and your therapist will create a picture of what your challenges are and what you'd like to change.

3. Next your therapist will start by helping you with immediate concerns like managing difficult emotions and challenging life situations.

This helps us prepare to start the “reprocessing” phase of EMDR treatment.

4. You will also work together to discover insight and feelings in therapy and in life that might surprise you.

5. Keeping your unique self, needs, history and goals in mind, you’ll figure out memories and beliefs you need to “clear” to help you grasp a peaceful present and a joyful future.

6. Over the course of your sessions, you will start gaining insight, validation, feel long stifled feelings again and thereby make progress towards the life that feels best for you!

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR

It depends on what you're working through and which therapist you're seeing. Some people notice shifts within a handful of sessions, and others prefer our EMDR intensives, which are longer sessions designed to work through a specific memory or issue more quickly. Your therapist will talk through what makes sense for your situation.

When you reach out, we'll match you with the therapist on our team who's the right fit and has availability. Our therapists all share the same real, non-hierarchical affirming approach, so you're in good hands no matter who you see.

Yes. In addition to in-person sessions in Lakewood, our team offers virtual EMDR sessions to clients anywhere in Ohio.

While EMDR was originally developed for trauma, our therapists also use it for anxiety, panic, depression, hypervigilance, and stuck points that show up in relationships, including for clients in struggling family, friend, or relationship configuraitons that don't fit a one size fits all mold.

Not at all. One of the most helpful things about EMDR is that you don't have to narrate the whole story unless you want to. Your therapist can guide the process even when you keep certain details private.
