You've Tried. Something Still Feels Off.

Guidance through the complexities of life.

You've read the books. You've tried meditation. Maybe you've even done a few rounds of therapy, and while it helped a little, something still feels off. You know yourself well enough to know there's a root to this. You just haven't gotten there yet.

That's not a reflection of how hard you've tried. For a lot of people, traditional talk therapy is a good start, but it doesn't always reach the places where anxiety, depression, old grief, or the weight of long-standing patterns actually live. Especially when what's going on isn't neatly captured by a diagnosis or a label.

What you're looking for is a therapist who won't just nod and validate. Someone who's willing to dig in, ask the real questions, and help you actually move forward, not just cope better. If that sounds like what's been missing, you're in the right place.

Counseling That Goes Further Than Talking

Counseling and psychotherapy at Recreating Dawn is talk-based at its foundation, but it doesn't stay there. Depending on what you're working through and who on our team you're matched with, your sessions may weave in Art Therapy or trauma-informed frameworks like CBT or DBT. Some providers also offer EMDR and Brainspotting for clients ready to go beyond the cognitive layer.

We serve individuals, teens, couples, and families, including LGBTQ+ and gender-diverse individuals, polyamorous and expansive relationships, and clients navigating complex trauma or chronic illness. If you've wondered whether a therapist will "get" your life, our team is built for exactly that.

Sessions are available in-person at our Lakewood, OH office and virtually across all of Ohio.

Real Humans. Real Training. Real Difference.

Joy Williams founded Recreating Dawn on a belief that's easy to say and harder to actually practice: that good therapy means being a real human alongside someone, not a neutral expert with a clipboard. She trained at the Cleveland Clinic, holds credentials as both a therapist and a Board-Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC), and founded the Intuitive Clinicians Council, a nonprofit professional network supporting clinicians doing this kind of integrative, person-first work.

The team at Recreating Dawn follows her lead. Every clinician brings a genuine, relatable presence to sessions. That's not a brand line. It's how Joy describes what makes this practice different from everything else she's seen: therapists who are a few strides ahead on the same journey, not standing apart from it.

  • Trauma-informed across the full team: not a specialty add-on, but the lens every therapist works through
  • LGBTQ+ and kink-affirming: no explaining, no flinching, no conditions
  • Art Therapy credentialing (ATR-BC): for clients where words alone don't reach far enough

What to Expect When You Start

  1. Your first conversation: Before anything else, you'll connect with a therapist who's a genuine fit for what you're working through. We match intentionally, not just by availability.
  2. Building your approach: Your first few sessions are about understanding what's actually happening and why. Together, you'll shape a direction that fits your life and your goals.
  3. Moving forward: Progress here isn't just feeling better in session. It shows up in the decisions you make, the relationships you're in, and the old patterns you stop running.

What Changes When You Find the Right Fit

Getting to the root, not just the surface: Many people come here after years of managing symptoms. What changes here is that you stop managing and start resolving. That's the difference between coping and actually getting somewhere.

A therapist who gets your life: Whether you're LGBTQ+, navigating non-traditional relationships, or just someone who doesn't fit neatly into a standard therapy model, you won't spend your sessions explaining yourself before you can do the actual work.

Faster, more tangible change: Specialized approaches like Art Therapy, EMDR, and Brainspotting access parts of the brain that talk therapy alone can't reach. Many clients notice real shifts sooner than they expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many of our therapists accept major insurance plans. Visit our Fees page or contact us directly to confirm what's accepted and what your out-of-pocket costs might look like. Some specialized services, including EMDR Intensives, are typically private pay.

That's actually one of the most common reasons people come to us. Talk therapy alone doesn't work for everyone, and it doesn't work for everything. If the root of what you're carrying is connected to trauma, identity, or long-standing patterns, a more specialized approach, or simply a different kind of therapist, can make a significant difference.

Our intake process is designed to match you thoughtfully. Each clinician on our team has different specializations and populations they work with most. If your first match isn't the right one, we'll help you find someone who is.
